How to Annoy a Brit
Forget to say please or thank you every time you are given anything (even a bill!)
Refuse to talk about the weather.
Mildly disagree with them.
Jump a queue.
Keep saying ‘after you’ rather than going through the door that’s been opened.
Offer postive ideas and solutions to everything they moan about.
Ban the colours beige and magnolia.
Weep loudly in public.
Admit that you hate animals, especially dogs and cats.
Praise the current Government.
Act happy in a post office

Came to you via Janet at Lord Celery. Very funny post indeed. It may inspire me to do the same at my place about either how to be annoyed by Americans (which is far easier for Brits to do, let’s face it), or how to annoy Americans (if Brits can bring themselves to be deliberately annoying).

I’m sure they can
Why not try both. I’ll look forward to reading them.

Sephe,
I learned all about the sanctity of a queue when I lived in Manhattan, so moving here was easy in that regard.
You’ll enjoy this one. In Oxford, American tourists often jump the queue for the park & ride bus I take to get in and out of the city. The Brits in the queue will frown but say nothing. *I* am the one who tells the line jumpers that “there’s a queue here…” and sends them to the back of the line!

Aaah that’s the stiff upper lip you see - when furious we frown when others act! There again we have a variety of frowns, mildly displeased (straight liney mouth) Disappointed with the weather, line on forehead, mousey mouth…I might do a post on all these soon

Hope you don’t mind - I tagged you on my blog. Feel free to ignore it though if you don’t find the questions interesting!

I think Janet has discovered the ancient British art of “seething”. People are supposed to feel the anger that jumping the queue brings on. Most Brits can feel it, and some are even brave enough to ignore it as they know no-one will say anything.
Will have to give this all some thought for a post.

I noticed the please thing when I’m out there and a bucket load of ‘nice days’ don’t make up for its absence! My brother’s partner is from USA and never EVER says please. He’s been out there so long, he doesn’t say it much either and finds us all too polite when he comes back to visit, though his real bugbear is that we’re all forever saying sorry to each other! (tried to post this on your site umpteen times but it kept knocking it back!)

Hmmm. I’m not a bit technical but others have been able to post today. I have often wondered why Americans find the “sorry” thing so annoying. I don’t say it as much as I used to though.

Oh yeah, too funny. When I first moved to the US I remember being surprised at how little the Americans say “please” or “thank you” and now I wonder why my fellow Brits say it so much.
